Mississippi State Soccer Shuts Out Kentucky in Scoreless Draw

Lexington, Ky. — On a quick turnaround, Mississippi State’s women’s soccer team delivered another strong defensive performance Sunday, tying Kentucky 0-0 on the road.

Less than 72 hours after a scoreless draw against No. 6 Tennessee, the Bulldogs (7-1-3, 1-0-3 SEC) held Kentucky, which entered the game ranked seventh nationally in goals per game, to just 13 shots. Kentucky managed five shots on goal, with four blocked by Mississippi State defenders.

Goalkeeper Jenny Harrison recorded her fourth shutout of the season, making five saves, including a highlight-reel stop in the 58th minute to push a header over the crossbar, according to the school’s release. Kentucky’s offense, which typically puts more than half of its shots on target, was frustrated by the Bulldogs’ defensive effort.

Head coach Kevin O’Brien praised his team’s resilience, noting the squad’s limited rotation and the long road trip. “It’s a long road weekend, five days on the road, two SEC games, two shutouts. I’m really proud of the group,” he said. “The players are a little disappointed because I know they wanted more out of it, but for me, the fact that we’re a little bit of a thinner squad, we don’t have as big a rotation as a lot of teams, I’m just incredibly impressed with how we dig deep, battle and fight.”

Mississippi State had its best scoring chances early in the match. In the 11th minute, Kyli Switalski’s free kick from outside the box hit the crossbar. Hailey Johnson had a one-on-one opportunity in the 21st minute but was denied by Kentucky’s goalkeeper.

Switalski led the team with three shots, while Johnson and others recorded two or more attempts. Defensively, Chiara Tappe made multiple slide tackles to disrupt Kentucky breakaways. Kara Harris also stood out for her shot-blocking efforts, and Harris credited her teammates for their solid play.

The Bulldogs now prepare to host No. 17/21 South Carolina at 6 p.m. CT Friday, Oct. 2, in a nationally televised match on ESPNU. Mississippi State has earned at least one point in every SEC match this season and looks to continue its strong defensive streak.
