Men’s soccer falls in SLIAC opener to Spalding 6-1

The W men’s soccer team lost its opening game in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday, falling 6-1 to Spalding University at the Roger Short Soccer Complex in Columbus, Mississippi.

The Owls are now 0-8-7 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference. Spalding improved to 2-6-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play.

Spalding took an early lead, scoring just 50 seconds into the match. An own goal by the Owls in the 12th minute extended the deficit to 2-0. MUW trailed 3-0 at halftime and allowed three more goals in the second half.

Freshman Gracen Williams scored his first goal as an Owl in the 80th minute, heading in a corner kick from Joao Pais to make the final score 6-1.

Goalkeeper Will Rickman recorded two saves during the match. The Owls will continue conference play Thursday at Eureka College at 7:30 p.m.
