Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s soccer team improved to 7-0 with a 2-1 win over Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit on Tuesday. It was their first road conference game of the season.
The game started slow, but the Rangers scored twice in quick succession. Sophomore Jaden Newman put Northwest ahead in the 24th minute after capitalizing on a defensive miscue by Southwest. Less than 40 seconds later, Lena Scholze headed in a corner kick from Emma Demassey to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead, which ultimately stood as the game-winner.
Despite dominating possession with 24 shots and 12 corner kicks, Northwest was unable to add to their tally. Southwest scored their lone goal in the 69th minute on a free kick from about 30 yards out. The Bears’ attempt was their only shot on goal in the second half, and they did not earn any corners in the game.
Northwest’s defense held strong in the final minutes, limiting Southwest to just four shots and preventing any additional scoring opportunities. Head coach James Beattie acknowledged his team’s performance, saying, “We probably weren’t good enough on the night. I’ve said that a sign of a good team is a team that doesn’t play well and wins, so hopefully we learn from it and move on.”
