The William Carey Lady Crusaders defeated Point University 3-2 in a five-set match Saturday afternoon at the Ben Waddle Sports Facility, extending their winning streak to three matches, according to school officials.
Carey took an early lead in the first set before Point rallied to tie at 7-7. The Lady Crusaders then built a 15-11 advantage, but Point responded with a run to tie the score at 16-16. Carey finished the set on an 8-2 run to win 25-19.
The Crusaders carried momentum into the second set, jumping ahead 6-1. Point responded, tying the score at 8-8, and the teams exchanged points until Carey secured a 26-24 victory with kills from Rachel Stegall and Maurin Reyes, along with a service ace from Stegall.
In the third set, Carey opened with four straight points, but Point fought back. A 6-1 run gave Carey a 10-5 lead, but Point eventually tied the score and took a 22-18 lead before winning 25-19 to force a fourth set.
The Lady Crusaders jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set and held a 15-9 advantage. Point chipped away, taking a 17-16 lead, and the teams exchanged leads until back-to-back errors by Carey gave Point a 27-25 win, tying the match at 2-2.
In the decisive fifth set, Carey opened with a 9-5 lead. Point rallied to tie at 10-10, but Reyes delivered a key kill to bring Carey to match point. An attack error by Point sealed the victory for the Lady Crusaders. Carey is scheduled to return to action Friday at Blue Mountain Christian for a conference game at 6 p.m., officials said.
