William Carey Volleyball Stuns Mobile in Five-Set Comeback

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey rallied from a two-set deficit to beat the University of Mobile in a five-set match Saturday at the Ben Waddle Complex.

The first set was closely contested until Mobile used a 5-1 run to lead 11-7. William Carey responded, narrowing the gap to 13-12, but Mobile pulled away late to win 25-20.

The Rams carried momentum into the second set, opening with a 4-1 run. William Carey regained control, leading 9-8 and trading points until Mobile closed with a 6-1 run to win 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set saw Mobile jump out early, but William Carey fought back. Tied at 17-17, the Lady Crusaders scored five consecutive points to take a 22-18 lead. Mobile responded, trimming the deficit to 23-22, but Carey secured the set with a kill from Rachel Stegall and a block from Emily Martin and Aubrey Easley, winning 25-22 and staying alive in the match.

The Lady Crusaders then took control in the fourth set, jumping to a 7-4 lead. Mobile tied the score at 16-16, and the lead changed multiple times late. Carey responded to a 23-22 deficit with a kill from Stegall and a block from Reyes and Easley, winning 25-23 to force a fifth set.

In the final frame, Carey took an early 10-9 lead and maintained a narrow advantage. Stegall delivered two kills, and a Mobile error extended the lead to 13-9. Mobile made a late push, but Alejandra Villarreal’s match-winning kill gave William Carey a 15-13 victory and completed the comeback.

The Lady Crusaders will host Xavier University in SSAC play on Friday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Ben Waddle Complex.
