William Carey Volleyball Tops Baptist University in Five Sets

GRACEVILLE, Fla. — William Carey’s volleyball team edged Baptist University of Florida in a five-set match Tuesday afternoon, 3-2.

The Crusaders started slow, falling behind 8-3 in the first set before rallying to tie at 10-10. Baptist University responded with an 11-4 run to win the set 25-17.

William Carey recovered in the second set, opening with an 11-5 lead. The Eagles trimmed the deficit to three points several times, but the Crusaders responded with a 5-0 run to take the set 25-19 and even the match at one set each.

The Crusaders carried momentum into the third set, racing out to an 11-1 lead. They dominated from start to finish, winning 25-7 and taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, William Carey opened with four straight points. Baptist University responded with a 7-1 run to take a 7-5 lead. The Eagles maintained a narrow edge for much of the set until three kills from Hadley Soutiere and Rachell Stegall tied the score at 16-16. The teams exchanged points and reached a 23-23 deadlock, but the Eagles scored the final two points to win 25-23 and force a decisive fifth set.

The Crusaders started strong in the fifth, jumping to a 7-2 lead. They maintained control and closed out the match with a 15-9 victory.

William Carey returns to action Friday, Sept. 25, hosting Life University in SSAC play at the Ben Waddle Complex. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
