Loyola Tops William Carey in Conference Volleyball Match
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey’s volleyball team lost to Loyola University New Orleans in three sets Saturday in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
The Lady Crusaders started strong in the first set but couldn’t overcome an early deficit. Loyola used a 10-4 run midway through to build a 21-13 lead and took the set 25-19.
William Carey responded in the second set with a quick start, scoring the first three points. Loyola answered with four straight. The teams traded points, and the set remained close. Loyola pulled ahead late with a 5-0 run to lead 20-15. Carey rallied, cutting the deficit to 23-22 and 24-23, but Loyola secured the set 25-23 with a kill.
In the third set, Carey again took an early lead before Loyola surged ahead 11-8. The Wolfpack gradually extended their advantage to 20-12. The Lady Crusaders mounted a late comeback, narrowing the gap to 21-18, but Loyola finished strong with four straight points to win the set and sweep the match.
William Carey will return to action Tuesday, Sept. 22, when it travels to Graceville, Florida, for a non-conference game against Baptist University of Florida. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
