Southern Miss Men’s Golf Ties for Sixth at JT Poston Invitational

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. — Benjamin Fernandez shot a six-under 65 to move into a tie for third place and lead the University of Southern Mississippi men’s golf team at the JT Poston Invitational. The Golden Eagles finished the second round tied for sixth place Monday afternoon, according to tournament organizers.

Fernandez posted a strong front nine with three birdies and an eagle on the par-4 15th hole, then added two more birdies on the back nine. His performance helped him sit at 10-under par for the tournament. His teammates also contributed as John Markow shot a three-under 68, tallying six birdies. Matthew Javier posted a one-under 70, matching his first-round score, with five birdies, leaving him tied for 32nd individually.

Supakorn Amornchaichan turned in a one-under 70, with three birdies, especially excelling on par-5 holes. Jake Moffitt registered a 72, tying for 53rd place. Franco Fernandez shot a five-over 76, adding two birdies to his total. At the end of the round, Southern Miss was tied with UTRGV at 15-under par, trailing Elon and South Carolina, who were tied for fourth at 17-under.

North Carolina State led the tournament at 26-under, with Lipscomb and Virginia Tech tied for second at 22-under. The third round is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 a.m., with live scoring available online.

Ben Fernandez is currently tied for third individually at 10-under par after rounds of 67 and 65. The Golden Eagles are seeking to improve their standing in the final round.
