Owls’ women’s soccer nearly upset No. 2 USSU in 2-1 loss

Columbus, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women women’s soccer team came within seconds of upsetting nationally ranked United States Sports University but ultimately fell 2-1 at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls are now 0-5-0 this season, while the Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, improved to 2-0-0.

USSU opened the scoring in the 25th minute and held a 1-0 lead into halftime. Early in the second half, MUW’s Reagan Shinn scored her first goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1 in the 51st minute. The score remained level for much of the second half, with MUW seemingly headed for a draw.

However, with only 15 seconds remaining, USSU controlled the ball in MUW’s half and scored the game-winning goal. Despite being out-shot 23-6, MUW made five of its six attempts on goal, while USSU managed nine shots. Veteran goalkeeper Cam Lopez, making her first appearance of 2026, recorded seven saves in the loss.

The Owls will begin St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, hosting Spalding University at noon.
