Northwest Volleyball Wins 20th Straight With Sweep of Northeast
BOONEVILLE, Miss. — Northwest Mississippi Community College’s volleyball team improved to 20-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play with a straight-set win over Northeast Mississippi Community College on Tuesday. The Rangers defeated the Tigers 25-15, 25-19, 25-11, marking their 20th consecutive victory and their sixth sweep of the season.
Sophomore Talley Taylor attributed the team’s success to hard work and strong coaching. “It’s really just a feeling of accomplishment that all the hard work that we’ve put in and the team that the coaches have built is paying off,” she said after the match. “We are just really pushing ourselves and staying humble but also hungry, and we want to keep winning.”
Northwest surged early in the first set, overcoming a 4-2 deficit with a five-point run led by Ariana Woods. The Rangers maintained control, closing out the set with a 25-15 win after a seven-point rally from Reese McIntosh, who led the team with five kills and five aces. The Tigers fought back in the second set, trading leads with Northwest until the Rangers pulled away late for a 25-19 victory. Jania Rose sparked the surge with a four-point run, and Woods added a key kill to help secure the win.
The third set was dominated by the Rangers, who jumped to a 14-5 lead and extended it to 22-7, eventually closing with a 25-11 score. Northwest’s balanced attack featured 13 kills from Sofia Gonzalez and 9 from Ariana Woods, who also recorded her 500th career kill — second in program history behind Jacia Hayes’ 533. Woods added a team-high 15.5 points and six blocks, including one solo effort.
Defensively, Rose led with 33 digs, while Woods contributed 15.5 points and Woods’ season-high six blocks. The team finished with nine total blocks, and Rodriguez dished out 30 assists. The team’s serving was effective, with 13 aces led by McIntosh’s five and Woods’ three. The Tigers managed only two aces in the match.
Northwest wraps up MACCC play this week with road matches at Henderson State University and Champion Christian College JV team Friday. The team returns home Monday to face No. 21 Pearl River Community College at Howard Coliseum, with the match scheduled for 5 p.m. and streamed on Ranger TV. Coach Ashley Black emphasized the team’s focus on each game, saying, “We are just taking it one game at a time.”
