SEWANEE, Tenn. — Millsaps College opened Southern Athletic Association play at the Sewanee Quad Match with a 3-0 loss to Sewanee on Saturday. The following day, the Majors responded with a 3-0 victory over Maryville College inside Juhan Gymnasium, according to team sources.
In the first match, Sewanee won 25-20, 25-20, 25-23. Senior Sandy Bourgeois led the team with 18 digs and added a service ace. Sophomore Laila Fredieu served four aces and recorded three digs. Junior Zoë LaCaze led in kills with six, hitting .308, and contributed two block assists. Freshman Rachel Zamjahn tallied 10 assists, a service ace, and a block assist, the team said.
During the match, Sewanee took the first set after a late push, despite Millsaps’ effort to rally. The Tigers created a 21-14 cushion before holding on for the win. The second set saw Sewanee build an early lead and close out with a 25-20 score. In the third set, Millsaps fought back from an 8-7 deficit, taking a 15-8 lead after an 8-0 run, but Sewanee ultimately edged the set 25-23 to seal the match.
The second match saw Millsaps sweep Maryville 25-23, 25-11, 25-14. Duncan led with 13 kills on a .409 hitting percentage and added a block assist. Bourgeois had 18 digs and three assists. Freshman Khloe Duncan contributed with 13 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. Drury dished out 22 assists, and Sasser added seven kills on a .412 clip, team officials reported.
The Majors dominated in kills, finishing with 44 compared to Maryville’s 26, and committed fewer attack errors. Millsaps also held advantages in digs (49-38) and total blocks (6-1). The team will host Trinity University on Friday at 6:30 p.m. inside the Hangar Dome, with live stats and streaming available, according to school updates.
Millsaps College, founded in 1890 in Jackson, Mississippi, is a national liberal arts college known for academic excellence and social engagement, the college said. The program’s next match will be broadcast online, and updates can be followed on the team’s social media accounts.
