Jackson State Tennis Wins Doubles Title at HBCU Nationals

Jackson State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams concluded a successful run at the 25th annual HBCU National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. The Tigers secured a doubles championship and added several individual awards to their tally.

Ching Chang Chiu and Devesh Sarawanan won the Flight B doubles title Saturday morning, defeating North Carolina Central’s Pol Puig Montiel and Leo Fortier-Gariepy, 6-2, on Court 14. The duo advanced through matches against Alabama State, Alabama A&M, and North Carolina Central to claim the crown.

On the women’s side, the Tigers earned two third-place finishes. Polina Georgieva defeated Alabama A&M’s Nardine Salem, 6-1, 6-1, in the Flight B singles third-place match. Helen Hernandez posted a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Alabama A&M’s Rim Assanhaj in the Flight C playoff.

Freshman Angel Hernandez also contributed to the team’s success, finishing fourth in Flight B singles. Hernandez was edged out by North Carolina Central’s Adrian Matei Nedelcu, 6-4, 6-4, in a competitive playoff match.

Jackson State will conclude its fall season at the SWAC Fall Individual Championship starting Friday, Oct. 2, at the JSU Tennis Center.
