The Millsaps College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Southern Showcase on Friday at the John Hunt Cross Country Course in Huntsville, Alabama. The Majors participated in the Open races, with standout performances from several student-athletes.
Junior Greer Hernandez finished 14th out of 239 runners in the men’s eight-kilometer race, clocking in at 26 minutes, 15.6 seconds, according to the college. Sophomore Dallas Stricker made his season debut, finishing 112th with a time of 28:59.5. Other men’s competitors included Benjamin Sylve (155th, 30:01.8), Mason Castleberry (162nd, 30:18.5), Ethan Hall (192nd, 32:06.0), R.T. Tate (193rd, 32:08.1), and Phillip Antis (197th, 32:40.7). Freshmen Kameron Willson, Jonathan Brister, Om Patel, and Damaurien Graves also competed, finishing 206th, 208th, 220th, and 230th, respectively.
On the women’s side, freshman Lila Jane Sekinger led the team with a time of 24:22.7 over six kilometers, placing 142nd. Fellow freshmen Marlina Jones (155th) and Claudia Dempsey (157th) finished close together with times of 26:14.4 and 26:16.3. Caitlyn Bounds and Myla Walker rounded out the field for Millsaps, finishing 160th and 176th with times of 26:33.9 and 29:26.7.
The teams are scheduled to return to competition at the Mountain Goat Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee, on Saturday, Oct. 3, beginning at 9 a.m., according to the college.
