Jackson State Cross Country Finishes Second at Warhawk Invitational

The Jackson State men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Friday at the Warhawk Invitational hosted by ULM at the Sterlington Sports Complex in Louisiana. The men’s team finished second with 58 points, with four runners finishing in the top 10, while the women placed fourth with 82 points, featuring two top-10 individual finishers.

Freshman Ryan Achau won his second consecutive race, clocking 14:59.41 in the men’s 5K. Achau was named the SWAC Men’s Newcomer of the Week after his victory at the MC Opener earlier this month. Sophomore Duncan Koima finished fourth in 15:40.78, one of only five runners to break 16 minutes.

Godfrey Kiumutai and Collins Kibet also finished inside the top 10, with times of 16:02.30 and 16:06.83, respectively. Rounding out Jackson State’s scoring five were Derick Eskridge (20:06.58) and Levy Russell III (20:09.49), who finished 41st and 42nd.

On the women’s side, Lorine Jelagat led the Tigers, finishing seventh in 19:59.85. Freshman Sya Bolden was ninth with a time of 20:15.65. Other scorers included Joan Koech (21st, 21:30.57), Karina Griffin (23rd, 21:32.73), Kimani Tindal (27th, 23:46.29), and Kaylin Jackson (29th, 24:24.08).

Jackson State returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Nicholls XC Invitational in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The men’s four-mile race begins at 8 a.m. CT, followed by the women’s 5K at 8:30 a.m.
