Hendrix edges Millsaps 36-27 in thriller at Harper Davis Field
JACKSON, Miss. — Hendrix College edged Millsaps College 36-27 in a back-and-forth football contest Saturday at Harper Davis Field. The game served as the Hall of Fame Game, with halftime honors for alumni and supporters, including Erica Cook, John Fox, Mike Galatas, Jason Hadley, Christina Sharp Bost, John Shivers, and Dr. Timothy Ward, who received the Sam Knox Distinguished Service Award.
Both teams traded leads throughout the game, which remained close until a late lateral play turned into a fumble-recovery touchdown on the final snap. Millsaps rushed for 278 yards on 52 attempts, while Hendrix completed 25 of 35 passes for 387 yards and added 76 rushing yards. The Warriors had a slight edge in red-zone conversions, going three for four compared to Millsaps’s one for two.
Senior quarterback Quez Goss threw for 127 yards and one touchdown in his first start of the season. He also gained 26 yards on the ground. Tameron Patterson led Millsaps in rushing with 173 yards and a score on 29 attempts. Wide receiver Sean Johnson caught five passes for 57 yards and scored his first touchdown as a Major. On defense, junior Cole Williams led with nine tackles, while Kyle Veal Jr. recorded seven tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery, and returned the fumble 40 yards for a touchdown.
Special teams contributor Connor Babin kicked five kickoffs for an average of 64.8 yards, including four touchbacks. Hendrix opened the scoring with a 73-yard touchdown pass on its first play. Millsaps responded quickly with a 43-yard rushing touchdown from Carl Reed Jr. The game remained tied until the second quarter, when Hendrix took a 7-point lead with a 7-yard touchdown pass. Millsaps responded with a touchdown pass from Goss to Johnson, tying the game at 14.
The Warriors regained the lead before halftime with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by Veal Jr., following a forced fumble by Warren. Hendrix extended its lead with a 58-yard touchdown pass, though the extra point was missed, leaving the score at 27-20. In the fourth quarter, Patterson’s 34-yard run tied the game at 27 with 8:08 remaining. Hendrix responded with a 25-yard field goal, and the game ended with a controversial finish after a series of laterals led to a final touchdown for Hendrix with two seconds left.
Hendrix improves to 1-1 and will next face Rhodes College on Oct. 3. Millsaps, now 2-1, enters a bye week before returning to conference play.
