Alcorn State Volleyball Heads to Memphis for Carrie Yerty Classic

Alcorn State’s volleyball team is preparing for a busy week in Memphis, Tennessee, participating in the Carrie Yerty Classic hosted by the University of Memphis. The Lady Braves recently fell in three sets to Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana, despite strong individual performances, according to team statistics.

Sophomore Rylan Jones led the team with 15 kills, reaching the 200-kill milestone for her career. Setter Daylin Saiki recorded 18 assists, surpassing 100 career assists. The team will face Memphis on Thursday, Mississippi State on Friday, and Boston College on Saturday at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

Alcorn is not ranked in this week’s AVCA Division I Coaches Poll Top 25, nor are its upcoming opponents. The team’s notable players include Courtney Carter, who has 59 kills and 66.5 points; Rylan Jones, with 54 kills; and Jaylynn McNeill, who has 48 kills and boasts a .298 hitting percentage.

Memphis’s leading attacker is Caitlyn Little, with 83 kills and 56 digs. Mississippi State’s top hitter is Lindsey Mangelson, with 92 kills and 59 digs. Boston College’s Audrey Ross leads with 78 kills and 88.5 points. The teams will look to improve their records after opening the season winless so far.

Alcorn is currently 0-6 overall and 0-0 in SWAC play. The Lady Braves will next face Alabama on Wednesday, Sept. 16, in Tuscaloosa. Interim head coach Gabrielle Harris is in her second year leading the team.
