William Carey men’s soccer dominates season opener with 6-0 win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The William Carey men’s soccer team kicked off its 2026 season with a 6-0 victory over Texas Wesleyan University Thursday night at Danny Owens Field.

Head coach Barry Farrell praised his team’s performance. “Dominant performance tonight in our opening game,” Farrell said. “Our squad is deep this year, and I am excited to see us improve as a team throughout the season.”

The Crusaders threatened early when Daniel Mulero’s shot from beyond midfield hit the right post. Carey broke through in the 18th minute when Souleymane Balde won a loose ball in midfield and set up Jean Danitanga for a goal, giving the team a 1-0 lead.

Mulero scored spectacularly in the 31st minute with a free kick into the top-right corner, doubling the lead. Kenson Pierre added a third in the 36th minute on a corner kick, and Carey held a three-goal advantage at halftime.

The Crusaders continued their attack in the second half, extending their lead in the 56th minute. Mulero found Balde behind the defense, and Balde finished calmly from a tight angle to make it 4-0.

Carey maintained relentless pressure, and Mulero forced a turnover in the penalty area before setting up Danitanga for his second goal, pushing the lead to 5-0. Fernando “Pirry” Cuesta Marin capped the scoring in the 83rd minute with a shot into the top corner after a pass from George Steers.

The Crusaders return to action Saturday, hosting Louisiana Christian at Danny Owens Field with a scheduled kickoff of 7:30 p.m., according to team officials.
