West Alabama hands Delta State men’s basketball 75-60 GSC quarterfinal loss
Livingston, Ala. — West Alabama took control early and never relinquished the lead, defeating Delta State 75-60 in the Gulf South Conference quarterfinals Monday night at Pruitt Hall.
The Tigers used a strong interior game and a rebounding advantage to extend their regular-season record to 25-4. West Alabama outscored Delta State 52-14 in the paint and collected 21 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds.
West Alabama led 22-9 midway through the first half and went into halftime with a 32-26 edge. The Tigers pushed the lead to as many as 28 points with 9:40 remaining in the game, maintaining control down the stretch.
Je’Marion Westbrook led Delta State with a career-high 30 points, shooting 8-of-16 from the field, 6-of-12 from three-point range, and perfect at the free-throw line with 8-of-8. He played all 40 minutes. DaCory Porter added 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for the Statesmen, who shot 32.1% from the floor and 28.6% beyond the arc.
For West Alabama, BJ Brown Jr. scored 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and Jakobe Singleton added 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Christian Thompson grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Tigers dominate the glass 46-29. The Tigers shot 51.5% after halftime and maintained their advantage in transition and around the rim.
Delta State finishes the season with an 11-17 record and has made three consecutive appearances in the Gulf South Conference tournament.
