The W Athletics to Celebrate 10th Anniversary in 2026-27 Season

The W Athletics at Mississippi University for Women will celebrate its 10th year of competition during the 2026-27 season, marking a decade since the university reinstated intercollegiate athletics for the 2017-18 academic year, according to Athletic Director Buddy Foster.

Foster said the upcoming season will feature several celebratory events. “The W Athletics has come a long, long way in what, in terms of the life of a collegiate program, is a relatively short period of time,” he said. “Based on recent trends, 2026-27 could be an incredible year to both honor this first decade and start our second with momentum.”

Foster emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of student-athletes, coaches, and the community in the program’s growth. He noted that the journey has included both challenges and successes since the program’s revival after MUW disbanded sports following the 2002-03 season. Despite hurdles, the program has experienced significant achievements over the past nine years.

As the longest-tenured athletics director since the program’s reinstatement, Foster has guided the Owls through transitions, including their recent move from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association to NCAA Division III status in 2023-24. Since joining the SLIAC, MUW has earned 95 Player of the Week honors, 141 all-conference selections, three SLIAC championships, and automatic NCAA bids.

In academics, student-athletes have received 146 SLIAC All-Academic Team honors with an average GPA of 3.17 since fall 2023. The department also dedicated over 4,000 hours to community service last year alone. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to OwlsAthletics.com for announcements about the Year 10 celebration events planned for 2026-27.
