Southwest’s Scott Varnado Inducted into Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame
Scott Varnado, a former student at Southwest Mississippi Community College, has been inducted into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame, according to college officials.
Varnado attended Southwest from 1970 to 1972, serving as student government vice president both years and earning a spot in the college’s Student Hall of Fame in 1972, officials said. During his time at Southwest, he played basketball and tennis.
In basketball, Varnado posted a career field goal percentage of 61%, earning honorable mention on the All-State team as a freshman and team MVP and second-team All-State honors as a sophomore. He averaged 11.5 points and 12 rebounds as a freshman and improved to 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in his sophomore year, sources said.
Varnado’s tennis achievements include reaching the state tournament in doubles in 1972, finishing second in the men’s doubles category with his partner. After leaving Southwest, he played basketball and earned a chemistry degree at Millsaps College, where he was also inducted into its Hall of Fame.
Varnado has been married for 48 years to his college sweetheart, Lindsay Shallcross, and they have two sons and five grandchildren, sources said.
