Southern Miss Football Returns to Practice Fields Amid Heat and Competition

The University of Southern Mississippi football team returned to practice Tuesday at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, continuing their sixth day of fall camp. Temperatures remained hot and humid as over 70 new players competed for playing time, according to first-year coach Blake Anderson.

Anderson emphasized the importance of consistency and effort in player development. He said the team is still in survival mode, working through the physical challenges of camp and transitioning from summer to football shape. “This week is pivotal,” he said. “We’ll see how tough they are and how they fight through it. That’s when players start showing their true capabilities.”

Among the key position battles is the quarterback competition, where returning redshirt seniors Landry Lyddy and John White are competing alongside new transfer Ethan Hampton from Illinois. Anderson said he hopes to name a starter soon but will wait until he is confident in the decision, even if it extends into game week.
