HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Southern Miss Golden Eagles opened the 2001 college football season with a 17-9 win over Oklahoma State on Sept. 1 at M. M. Roberts Stadium, despite rainy and wet field conditions, according to reports.
Southern Miss quarterback Jeff Kelly threw for 277 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-36 passing. Dawayne Woods rushed 25 times for 70 yards and a score, helping the Golden Eagles secure the victory. Kicker Brant Hanna added a 23-yard field goal, providing all the points needed.
The Golden Eagles’ defense played a crucial role, holding Oklahoma State out of the end zone and forcing four turnovers. Head coach Jeff Bower praised the defensive effort, saying, “Our defense did a great job. We didn’t look good early, but we adjusted. The players really settled in and played hard.”
Oklahoma State struck first with a 41-yard field goal by Luke Phillips in the first quarter after gaining good field position. Southern Miss responded with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Chris Johnson, followed by a second field goal from Phillips. The Golden Eagles led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Southern Miss extended its lead with an 11-play, 64-yard drive culminating in Woods’ one-yard rushing touchdown. Hanna’s second extra point made it 14-6. Hanna added a field goal late in the half, giving the Eagles a 17-6 advantage at halftime. Oklahoma State added a 32-yard field goal before the break.
In the second half, Southern Miss struggled offensively, managing just 96 yards and punting three times in five drives. Bower acknowledged the inconsistency, stating, “We did well in the first half, but in the second half, we were a little inconsistent on offense. We had a few chances in the third quarter to really put the game away, but we didn’t convert.”
Kelly led the Eagles with 277 passing yards. Kenneth Johnson caught seven passes for 92 yards, while LeRoy Handy added six receptions for 82 yards. On defense, Joe Henley recorded 10 tackles, and Terrell Paul contributed three sacks. Oklahoma State’s quarterback Aso Pogi threw for 294 yards on 26-of-38 passing, with Rashaun Woods leading all players with 10 receptions for 139 yards.
