Delta State Athletics Mourns Passing of Hall of Famer Dr. Thomas Wayne Lee Jr.

Delta State University Athletics announced the death of Hall of Famer Dr. Thomas Wayne Lee Jr., who passed away on June 26, 2026, at the age of 92. A former standout forward for the Statesmen during the 1956-57 season, Dr. Lee helped lead the team to a 36-11 record, the 1956 District 19 NAIA Championship, and a spot in the NAIA National Tournament.

His athletic achievements earned him induction into the Delta State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. After serving in the U.S. Army, Dr. Lee dedicated his life to education, working as a teacher, coach, and professor. He returned to Delta State in 2000 as a biology professor and remained there until his retirement in 2014.

Colleagues and former students remember him as a kind, humorous, and caring individual. Dr. Andrew Gordon, a former student, described him as a “one-of-a-kind guy” who was both a favorite professor and a fatherly advisor. Ashlee Nodhturft Scott, another former student-athlete, recalled Dr. Lee’s lively presence on campus and his role as a mentor and friend.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lee influenced countless lives through teaching, mentorship, and encouragement. Delta State Athletics extended its condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him, honoring his legacy as a student-athlete, educator, and Statesman.
