Ripley natives help Southern Miss secure postseason berths in baseball and golf
Two Ripley, Mississippi, natives are playing key roles in the postseason pursuits of the University of Southern Mississippi athletics programs. Sophomore Ty Long and freshman Jake Moffitt are competing in baseball and men’s golf, respectively, both advancing to NCAA postseason events, according to university sources.
Long, an infielder, helped USM secure its first regular-season Sun Belt Conference baseball championship and the top seed in the conference tournament. The 21-year-old contributed during the final weekend, which clinched the Golden Eagles’ 10th consecutive 40-win season, the school said.
“It’s awesome,” Long said, reflecting on his team’s success. His journey included limited appearances in his first year, but an injury to another player allowed him to rejoin the starting lineup late in the season. Long emphasized the importance of staying prepared and maintaining a positive mindset regardless of playing time.
Meanwhile, Moffitt, a 19-year-old freshman, set a school record with a 70.4 stroke average over 30 rounds during his first college season. He earned Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors and played a vital role in USM’s first NCAA Men’s Golf Regional appearance. The golfer expressed confidence in the team’s chances to reach the national championships.
The childhood friends attribute their work ethic to growing up in a small town. Moffitt noted that their blue-collar upbringing instilled a relentless drive to outwork competitors, especially those from larger towns with more resources. Long agreed, adding that their upbringing helps them stay relaxed and focused under pressure.
Long, who previously earned Class 4A Mr. Baseball honors, discussed his season’s challenges and the importance of being ready for opportunities. Moffitt said he expected to contribute from the start and was pleased with his performance, which exceeded his initial expectations.
The two also recalled summer days spent practicing golf together from ages 8 to 13, which contributed to their development. Moffitt’s success in high school golf, including three state championships, laid the foundation for his college achievements.
Looking ahead, Moffitt aims for the team to finish top five at the NCAA regional and advance to the national tournament. Long remains focused on team goals, emphasizing that their mindset is to keep working and not be overwhelmed by expectations, noting that the team’s accomplishments at Pete Taylor Park are just part of the journey.
