Ole Miss Football Nears Season Opener Against Louisville as Fall Camp Closes
OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss is nearing the end of fall camp and shifting focus toward its season opener against Louisville on Sept. 6 in Nashville, according to a team release. The Rebels recently held their first scrimmage of camp and are now fine-tuning execution, communication, and assignments ahead of the game.
Ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press preseason poll, Ole Miss is coming off its first College Football Playoff semifinal appearance and a school-record 13-win season in 2025. With less than three weeks until kickoff, the team is simulating regular-season routines and preparing for the Cardinals.
Several defensive players discussed their development during fall camp, including Tah’j Butler, Jonathan Maldonado, Blake Purchase, and Edwin Joseph. Butler, after transferring from Georgia Tech, expressed confidence that Ole Miss’s scheme suits his playing style and highlighted his connection with former high school teammate Corey Adams.
“Once I came on my visit, I felt like it was going to fit me well, which I feel like it do. I could play more downhill and more physical,” Butler said. He added that understanding the defense better has allowed him to play faster and that he appreciates the talent up front, especially the defensive line.
Maldonado noted improvements since spring, citing increased strength and confidence. He also praised the depth across the defensive line, emphasizing its potential to generate consistent pressure on opponents. Maldonado highlighted the development of younger linemen like Landon Barnes, Carmelow Reed, and Jayden Curtis.
Purchase, focusing on pass rushing, said his understanding of the playbook has improved significantly. He expressed confidence in his ability to impact the game off the edge and credited increased football knowledge and technical moves for his progress. He also highlighted the depth and competition along the defensive front as key factors for the team’s success.
Meanwhile, transfer Edwin Joseph discussed his decision to join Ole Miss for a fresh start. After missing spring due to injury, Joseph said he is now fully healthy and enjoying the opportunity to learn multiple positions in the secondary. He expressed optimism about the safety group’s potential, citing trust and reliability among teammates.
As fall camp concludes, Ole Miss continues to prepare for its season opener, with players emphasizing a focus on daily improvements and team chemistry. The Rebels aim to build on last season’s historic run as they get ready for Louisville and the upcoming campaign.
