Ole Miss Coach John David Baker Discusses Offseason Focus on Offense
The Ole Miss football team is in its second week of fall camp as it prepares for the 2026 season opener against Louisville, according to a report from the university’s athletics department.
Offensive coordinator John David Baker spoke with local media Monday, outlining his approach to shaping the Rebels’ offense. Baker aims to leverage the team’s existing strengths rather than overhaul a system that has found recent success in Oxford.
“I don’t think it’s so much putting my stamp on things. It’s more so like we’ve been very successful here over the last five, six years because we’ve understood, okay, what are our pieces? And then using those guys the right way while also sticking to the core things that we believe in,” Baker said.
He emphasized the team’s focus on playing with pace, running effectively, being physical, and creating explosive plays. Baker said the goal is to maintain these core principles while maximizing the talent of the roster.
Baker also highlighted the versatility within his tight end group, noting that multiple players bring different skill sets. “It’s a unique room. You got a lot of different pieces in there. And it’s all about… figuring out how they fit, where to use them,” he said. He added that tight ends have a demanding role, requiring them to perform many tasks within the offense.
Trust, rather than talent alone, remains the key criterion for playing time according to Baker. “At the end of the day, it’s about trust over talent. Can I trust you to do your job?” He expressed a desire to build a deep, reliable wide receiver corps, hoping to have five or six players he can confidently deploy each game.
Regarding quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, Baker believes the sophomore has room for growth beyond his previous success. The coach said Chambliss’ development will focus on leadership and his ability to elevate the entire offense. “To me, the greatest trait of a quarterback is, you know, do you make the guys around you better?” Baker said. “He’s got to continue to learn how to bring guys with him, not just at the skill position, but those guys up front, tight ends, running backs, whoever it is.”
