NWCC women’s basketball beats Copiah-Lincoln for perfect week
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team finished a perfect week with a 77-69 victory over Copiah-Lincoln Community College over the weekend. The Rangers improved to 17-8 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
Both teams played evenly through the first half, each scoring 31 points. The third quarter saw a surge in offensive production from both sides, with each team scoring more than 20 points. Co-Lin held a slim three-point lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Northwest’s defense shined, limiting Co-Lin to 13 points. The Rangers scored 24 points in the final frame, sealing the win by eight points. Northwest also committed only 11 turnovers, nearly six fewer than their season average of 15.7. Offensively, the team outperformed its season averages in every category, shooting 44.1% from the floor and 41.2% from three-point range.
The team also shot 72% from the free-throw line, significantly better than their season average of 60%. Four starters scored more than 15 points. Alorian Story led all players with 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Layla Hampton tied her career-high with 17 points, shooting 100% from three-point range, and added five assists and rebounds. Dekyra Mitchell also scored 17 points, shooting 50% from the floor. Takera Bland contributed 16 points and four rebounds after returning to the court.
