Northwest women’s basketball wins fourth straight with 69-37 victory over MGCCC
The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team improved to 18-8 overall and 9-3 in conference play with a 69-37 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Saturday. The game, played in Perkinston, saw the Rangers control both ends of the court from the opening whistle.
Northwest started strong, scoring 22 points in the first quarter while limiting MGCCC to nine. Although the offense slowed in subsequent quarters, the team maintained its momentum, scoring at least 15 points in three of four quarters. The Rangers shot 40.3% from the field, 42.1% from three-point range, and 64.7% from the free-throw line. They made a season-high eight three-pointers in the game.
Freshman guard Dekyra Mitchell led the team with 25 points, including six three-pointers on 11 attempts. Sophomore forward Alorian Story posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while fellow forward Takera Bland scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double.
Mississippi Gulf Coast, averaging 61.9 points per game, was held to just 37 points. The Northwest defense kept the Bulldogs to only two quarters with double-digit scoring and limited them significantly throughout the game. The Rangers also protected the ball well, committing only seven turnovers—the fewest since a game against Itawamba Community College in late February.
Northwest is scheduled to host East Central on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Howard Coliseum for Sophomore Night. Fans can follow the team on social media or visit nwccrangers.com for updates.
