Northwest Mississippi Volleyball Earns AVCA Honor Roll for Second Consecutive Year

The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Honor Roll for the second consecutive year. The team was recognized for ranking in the top 20 percent of GPA nationally among division teams, with a cumulative GPA of 3.77, the highest in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC), according to school officials.

Northwest also received the AVCA Team Academic Award for the third time in its seven-year history. The award is given to teams maintaining a GPA of 3.3 or higher throughout the school year. Last year, the team also made the Honor Roll, and they earned the academic award in 2021.

Head Coach Allison Burchyett praised her players for their dedication. “We are so proud of the student-athletes and their hard work and dedication to representing Northwest well,” she said. “The support from Coach Charlsie Kennedy, the administration, staff, and faculty make it possible for these ladies to thrive.”

Northwest Athletic Director Jake Gordon highlighted the team’s academic momentum. “They are a great group of young women that deserve to be recognized for their efforts on the court and in the classroom,” he said.

Additionally, 11 players earned NJCAA All-Academic honors with GPAs of 3.6 or higher, and 15 made the Academic All-MACCC team with GPAs of 3.3 or higher. The team was one of three schools from the MACCC to earn the AVCA award, and only 19 NJCAA Division II junior colleges nationwide received the honor. Overall, 75 two-year programs across all levels of NJCAA, NWAC, and CCCAA were recognized.
