Northwest Mississippi Men’s Tennis Beats Southwest 5-2 in Region 23 Tournament Quarterfinals

ELLISVILLE — The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s tennis team secured a 5-2 victory over Southwest Mississippi in the quarterfinals of the Region 23 Tournament on Tuesday at Bobcat Tennis Courts.

The Rangers, seeded fourth with an 8-7 record, took an early lead by winning both doubles matches at the top two courts by 8-1 scores and edging the third doubles match 8-5. They carried a 3-0 advantage into singles play, needing just two wins to clinch the match.

Northwest dropped two singles matches but ultimately secured the necessary wins. Jordan Mitchell dominated his match, losing only one game, while Holden Cooke sealed the victory with a straight-sets win, dropping just four games across two sets.

Head coach Ryan Mounce praised his team’s performance, noting that Cooke’s ability to elevate his game helped finish the match. “Holden is just a game. Whenever it gets tight, Holden is the type of kid to raise his level,” Mounce said.

The Rangers will face top seed Jones College (15-1) in the semifinals Thursday at 10 a.m. in Ellisville. Regardless of the outcome, they are scheduled to play again Saturday in the tournament’s final or third-place match, both at the Bobcat Tennis Courts.
