Mississippi State Women’s Golf Adds Big West Freshman of the Year Alona Avery
Mississippi State women’s golf announced Tuesday that Alona Avery will join the team for the 2026-27 season. Avery, a rising junior from Riverside, California, spent her first two college seasons at UC Irvine.
During her time with the Anteaters, Avery earned 11 top-20 finishes in 18 tournaments. In her freshman year, she ranked second on the team with a 73.22 scoring average and played all 27 rounds.
Avery recorded six top-20 finishes, including five in the top 10. She made her collegiate debut with a runner-up finish at the Wolverine Invitational, shooting a 9-under 207, the third-lowest round in program history.
Over her two seasons, Avery totaled 21 rounds at par or better, including seven in the 60s. Her lowest score was a 5-under 67 during her freshman campaign. She was named the 2025 Big West Freshman of the Year and earned All-Big West First Team honors, according to university sources.
