Mississippi State softball’s postseason success fueled by broccoli and team spirit

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State University’s softball team has advanced to its first-ever Women’s College World Series, buoyed by a quirky symbol — broccoli. The team’s connection to the vegetable gained prominence during regional play in Oregon, where Jim Stewart Allen, known as the Broccoli Guy, cheered on the Bulldogs with a bunch of broccoli in hand.

Players embraced the symbol, with Ally Supan noting that Allen told them broccoli is ‘nature’s pom-poms.’ Supan said she carried the vegetable throughout the game, and it has become a rallying point for the team.
