Memphis beats Alcorn 7-2 in nonconference softball game

Memphis defeated Alcorn 7-2 in a nonconference softball game Tuesday evening at the Tigers Softball Complex in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Braves took an early 2-1 lead after the first inning. Memphis responded with three runs in the second inning and maintained the lead for the remainder of the game.

Deana Cunningham, the Tigers’ shortstop, went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, including a two-out, three-run homer off Alcorn starter Alainah Felton in the second inning that extended Memphis’s advantage to 4-2. Memphis relief pitcher Avery Stutts earned the win, throwing four innings of one-hit, shutout ball while striking out three and walking one. She entered in the fourth inning and retired 13 of the 14 batters faced.

Jasmine Chavez started for Memphis but was removed after facing five batters in the first, allowing two runs without a hit. Rylee Dugar pitched 2.1 innings before giving way to Stutts. Memphis also collected four steals in the game, with Faith Brown contributing a triple and Taylor Caton adding a double and an RBI. Other Tigers with stolen bases included Isabella Hune, Ariel Davis, Kylie Waldrep, and Paris Brienesse.

Alcorn’s Alainah Felton took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in three innings. Chiara Olison pitched three innings in relief, giving up two runs. Rajayla McBride was the Braves’ standout at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Karmen Bernard and Jamyiyah Cotten each scored runs for the Braves.

Alcorn was held scoreless after the first inning and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The team will next face Prairie View A&M in a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series April 17-18 in Prairie View, Texas.
