Marshall Stuffs Hornets with Eight Steals in Loss to Alabama State
Sydnei Marshall recorded eight steals to lead Mississippi Valley State University in an 86-70 loss to Alabama State on Saturday at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in Montgomery, Alabama.
The junior guard’s defensive performance accounted for two-thirds of the Devilettes’ 12 total steals. She also added four assists and scored 12 points, her season and game high. The Devilettes fell to 4-18 overall and 3-8 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Alabama State improved to 11-12 overall and 8-4 in league action.
Marshall’s defensive effort was a bright spot in the game. She helped disrupt the Hornets’ offense and contributed offensively as well. Nairobi Lewis recorded her fourth double-double of the season, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jaeda Murphy led Mississippi Valley State’s scoring with 14 points, including seven free throws. Desiree Smith blocked three shots and scored eight points in 14 minutes. Kylah McCullers and Ariel Jefferson added 11 and seven points, respectively.
The Hornets led throughout the game, maintaining a series advantage over the Devilettes with a 37-21 record. Alabama State has won two straight meetings against Mississippi Valley State, with the Devilettes’ last victory coming on Feb. 13, 2025.
