Jackson State Tops Mississippi Valley State 11-5 in Season Opener

Jackson, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University’s baseball team lost 11-5 to Jackson State on Friday at Magnolia Field, despite a standout performance from Gabe Huelsing, who reached base five times. The Diamond Devils, however, could not overcome the Tigers’ offensive production.

Huelsing went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two walks, falling one home run short of hitting for the cycle. He also scored two runs. Kendall Brookins contributed with a single, double, walk, and an RBI. Isreal Ramos finished 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, despite not starting in right field.

For Jackson State, Pierre Cabral led the offense with a two-run homer in the third inning. The Tigers scored multiple unearned runs in the fourth, extending their lead. Tyree Reed and Robert Tate Jr. also contributed with RBIs, helping Jackson State secure the victory.

On the mound, Gage Deutsch pitched six innings, allowing two runs and striking out six. Tom Early worked around a walk to add an RBI and reach base multiple times. The game marked the first of a series between the teams this season, with Mississippi Valley State scheduled to play again Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Diamond Devils fell to 11-33 overall and 7-18 in SWAC play with the loss. Jackson State improved to 23-23 and 13-12 in conference. Fans can follow the team on social media for updates.
