Jackson State Athletes Earn Preseason All-Conference Honors, Sallis Named Defensive Player of the Year
Jackson, Miss. — Six Jackson State University football players received preseason all-conference recognition from the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Wednesday. Kam Sallis was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team honors.
Sallis, a redshirt sophomore defensive back, played in all 11 games last season, starting every contest. He posted 53 tackles, including 27 solo stops, with two interceptions and two pass breakups. He also forced two fumbles and recorded a career-high 12 tackles against Prairie View A&M. Sallis was a semifinalist for the Aeneas Williams Award and made the second-team all-conference last season, according to SWAC.
Offensive lineman Quaveon Davis and wide receiver Nate Rembert joined Sallis on the first team. Davis, a senior, helped pave the way for three rushers to surpass 500 yards rushing, including a 1,000-yard rusher. He graded out at 88 percent, with 27 pancakes and allowing just 1.5 sacks. Rembert, a junior, played 12 games with 11 starts and caught 45 passes for 750 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 16.7 yards per reception and added 74 rushing yards with a touchdown.
Jared Lockhart, the reigning SWAC co-Freshman of the Year, was named second-team quarterback. The freshman played seven games, completing 76 of 113 passes for 1,187 yards, with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Lockhart was named SWAC co-Newcomer of the Week twice and earned FCS HBCU National Player of the Week honors after a standout game against Alcorn State.
Linebacker Carmello Jones and cornerback KJ Chisholm made the second team. Jones, a sophomore, appeared in 10 games, recording 36 tackles, including 17 solo stops, and 4.5 tackles for loss. Chisholm, a junior, played all 12 games with 11 starts, totaling 34 tackles and five pass breakups. Jackson State’s football season kicks off next week with SWAC Media Day, as the team prepares for the upcoming campaign.
