Blue Mountain Christian University Names Karnard McCray as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

Blue Mountain Christian University has announced the addition of Karnard McCray as an assistant coach for its women’s basketball program.

McCray, a native of Baker County, Florida, brings a diverse background in coaching and ministry. Most recently, he spent the 2025-26 season at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee, initially serving as an assistant coach for the men’s team before joining the women’s staff midway through the season. During his time there, he contributed to the team’s appearance in the TJCCAA quarterfinals.

Prior to his tenure at Pellissippi State, McCray gained coaching experience with the Memphis Home Education Association in Memphis, Tennessee. He spent three seasons as an assistant for the 18U boys team, helping lead the team to two Boys 18U Undisputed National Championships. He also served as head coach for the 16U boys team, posting a 50-22 record and guiding the team to two National Christian Homeschool Championship Final Four appearances. His team reached the Big South Regional Championship final twice and claimed the regional title in 2024.

McCray’s coaching journey began through ministry work. While in Memphis, he served as a full-time missionary with the North American Mission Board, discovering coaching as a pathway for discipleship and mentorship. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Religion with a Missions emphasis from Carson-Newman University and plans to pursue a master’s degree while at Blue Mountain.

Currently a member of First Baptist Church Macclenny in Florida, McCray expressed enthusiasm about joining the North Mississippi community. “I am honored and grateful to accept the position of assistant women’s basketball coach at BMCU,” he said. “Coach Rice’s leadership and vision made this an opportunity I was eager to be a part of. I look forward to serving our student-athletes, building meaningful relationships, and helping pursue excellence on and off the court.”

Blue Mountain Head Coach Tracy Rice highlighted McCray’s leadership qualities. “His work in missions and coaching set him apart,” Rice said. “Karnard is great with people, and his leadership will be a valuable asset to the future of Blue Mountain women’s basketball and our university.”

McCray’s addition reflects the university’s commitment to developing student-athletes spiritually, academically, and athletically. His background aligns with the institution’s values and aims to foster a culture of excellence within the Lady Topper program.
