Arkansas-Pine Bluff edges Jackson State in ninth-inning rally
Jackson, Miss. — Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past Jackson State 8-6 Thursday at Braddy Field. The Tigers’ Diego Melendez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a double, in the loss, which dropped Jackson State to 24-25 overall and 14-14 in the SWAC.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff built an early lead, scoring three runs in the first and third innings. Jackson State responded with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Melendez’s RBI double. The Tigers tied the game at 6-6 with a pair of runs in the seventh, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff regained the lead in the ninth with two runs, including one on a double by Aaron Grant.
Jackson State’s Kade Walker took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings of relief. Talmadge Davis pitched five innings, giving up four runs, two earned, with eight strikeouts. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Lazaro Alvarado and Grant each had two RBIs for the Golden Lions.
The two teams will meet again Friday afternoon for the series finale. Jackson State will look to even the series at home.
