Alcorn State Track & Field Heads to Georgia Tech Invitational

Alcorn State Track & Field is set to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility in Atlanta. The meet runs from April 17 to 18 and will feature both the men’s and women’s programs. Admission is free, and live results will be available online, according to meet organizers.

Head coach Banks expressed confidence in his team’s preparation. “We’ve had a strong week of training. I’m looking forward to seeing our student-athletes compete with confidence against quality opponents,” he said. The coach emphasized energy, discipline, and continuous improvement as the team’s focus as they prepare for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships.

The George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility, renovated ahead of the 1996 Olympics, is considered one of the top outdoor track venues in the Southeast. It features a state-of-the-art Mondo surface and has hosted numerous high-profile events, including records set during the 1996 Georgia Tech-Reebok Invitational. The facility is named after Hall of Fame coach George C. Griffin, who led Georgia Tech’s track and cross country programs for decades.

In their last meet at the Southern Miss Invitational, Alcorn athletes posted nine personal-best performances. Notable highlights included a school and stadium record in the 4×400 relay and strong showings from sprinters and throwers. SWAC champions Trellas Forrest and Derrick Williams highlighted the men’s team, posting personal bests and winning performances.

Alcorn’s athletes are now looking to build momentum ahead of the upcoming SWAC Championships, with the Georgia Tech Invitational providing an important final tune-up. Fans are encouraged to follow the team’s progress on social media platforms, including Twitter and Instagram, for updates throughout the weekend.
