Alcorn State Track & Field Excels at Alumni Bulldog Relays

Alcorn State University’s men’s and women’s track and field teams showcased their talents over the weekend at the three-day Alumni Bulldog Relays at Mike Sanders Track Complex in Starkville, Mississippi, hosted by Mississippi State University.

Derrick Williams led the men’s team with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native clocked 10.33 seconds in the 100m and 20.85 seconds in the 200m, according to meet results.

Senior Trellas Forrest from Winona, Mississippi, finished third in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 47.18 seconds. Head coach Alonzo Banks praised the effort, saying, “DJ [Williams] had a really strong showing. He’s been putting in the work day in and day out, and it was great to see that translate onto the track this weekend.”

On the women’s side, Izayla Harris impressed with a win in the 200 meters, running 23.52 seconds. Harris, a freshman from Doyline, Louisiana, also finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.62 seconds. Banks commended her performance, noting, “She came out focused, she competed with confidence, and she delivered when it mattered.”

Other notable finishes included Rikki Gray, who placed fourth in the women’s 400 meters in 57.29 seconds, and Kayotric Taplin, who clocked 14.14 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. In field events, Kaylin White finished third in the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.82 meters (19-01.25).

The men’s 4×100-meter relay team of Beethoven Phanord, Joe Coleman, Germari Wyre, and Derrick Williams secured second place with a time of 41.20 seconds. Banks expressed optimism about the team’s momentum, stating, “This meet gives us a lot of momentum heading forward. We’ll take the positives, address a few things in practice, and keep building.”
