Alcorn State Names NBA Veteran Monta Ellis as Men’s Basketball General Manager

Alcorn State University announced Friday that Monta Ellis, a former NBA guard, has been named the men’s basketball program’s new general manager. The Jackson, Mississippi native will assume his duties immediately.

Ellis, who was drafted 40th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2005, spent 12 seasons in the NBA with the Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers. He scored more than 14,800 points and averaged 17.8 points per game over his career, according to school officials.

“Today marks the beginning of an incredible new chapter, and I’m truly honored and excited to be named the general manager for men’s basketball at Alcorn State University,” Ellis said in a statement. “Alcorn isn’t just a university. It’s a place built on history, tradition, excellence, and a legacy that has impacted generations.”

Ellis’s accolades include NBA Most Improved Player in 2007, a career scoring average of 17.8 points, and high school honors such as McDonald’s All-American and Mr. Basketball USA while at Lanier High School in Jackson. He also led Lanier to two state titles and a runner-up finish, amassing 4,167 points in his prep career.

His responsibilities at Alcorn will include roster building, recruiting, transfer decisions, NIL opportunities, alumni relations, and mentoring players. School officials say his NBA experience and Mississippi roots will help elevate the program’s profile nationally and on the recruiting trail.

“Monta’s name alone opens doors for our program, from the recruiting trail to the national stage,” said Athletic Director E. D’Wayne Robinson. “He understands what it takes to compete and win at the highest level, and that perspective will be invaluable as we continue building a roster capable of competing for SWAC championships.”
