Alcorn Baseball Earns Win Over Grambling in Jackson Series

Alcorn State and Grambling State continued their three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series Monday at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi. The games were delayed by heavy rains that impacted field conditions in Lorman, Mississippi, where the series was originally scheduled to be played.

Grambling State took the second game of the series, 20-8, after the contest was resumed Monday. The Tigers scored early and often, piling up 20 runs on 17 hits. Second baseman Shannon Martin led the offense with two hits, five RBIs, and three walks. Charles Ashe III added four RBIs, and Trey Bridges scored five runs. Grambling’s starter Keevyn Goss earned a no-decision, allowing seven runs in four innings.

Alcorn bounced back later Monday to win the third game 12-11. Keatan Hawk homered twice and Rayfield Adams III drove in four runs. Hawk went 3-for-3 before exiting early, while Adams was perfect at the plate, reaching base four times. The Braves trailed 6-2 after Grambling’s five-run third but responded with four runs in the bottom half, keyed by Hawk’s second home run.

The game featured four lead changes and multiple pitching changes. Yoni Castro earned his first win of the season, pitching four scoreless innings in relief. Grambling’s Trevor Esparza lasted two innings, allowing five runs. Rafael Capistran took the loss for Grambling after surrendering two runs in three innings.

The series concludes Wednesday with a nonconference game at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium, where Alcorn will host Georgia State at 6 p.m. The teams will meet again in Lorman, Mississippi, with the series tied at one game apiece.
