Yahnya Acevedo led Alcorn State with seven hits across two games Thursday as the Braves split a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi.
In the first game, Alcorn won 8-4. Chiara Olison pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on six hits and earning the victory. Acevedo drove in two runs with a triple, and Olivia Miller added an RBI single to spark a five-run second inning. The Braves added three insurance runs in the sixth, including an RBI groundout by Miller and a two-run single from Olison.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff took an early lead with a solo home run from Lyric Perry in the second inning. The Golden Lions scored again in the fourth and seventh but couldn’t catch up. The second game was a 8-7 victory for UAPB. Arkansas-Pine Bluff built a 6-0 lead through three innings, aided by Alcorn errors. Traelen Humphrey earned her first save of the season, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings. UAPB capitalized on Alcorn errors early and added to its lead, but the Braves rallied late, scoring four runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Alcorn’s Mariah Morgan hit a two-run triple in the sixth to cut the deficit to one, but UAPB held on. Acevedo went 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and two stolen bases. Alainah Felton took the loss for Alcorn, surrendering five unearned runs in two innings. The teams will play a single game Friday at noon to conclude the series, followed immediately by a continuation of a game halted last month due to weather.
