Ole Miss Prepares for First SEC Road Test Against No. 21 Florida

The Ole Miss football team is set to face its first SEC road game of the season Saturday at Florida, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The Rebels, now 3-0 after a win over LSU, will take on the No. 21 Gators in Gainesville.

Head coach Pete Golding met with reporters this week along with defensive end Blake Purchase, wide receiver Caleb Odom, and defensive back Sharif Denson. Golding praised his team’s handling of the emotional week following the LSU victory but emphasized the need to focus on Florida.

Golding highlighted the importance of film sessions to identify strengths and weaknesses. He acknowledged that despite the win, there are areas for improvement as the team advances deeper into SEC play. He also noted the return of Denson and Antonio Kite to the secondary, which improved communication and tackling in space.

Golding expressed respect for Florida’s coaching staff under Jon Sumrall and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. He said Florida’s use of shifts and motion creates significant challenges for Ole Miss’s defense, which will need discipline to succeed. Golding also praised Florida running back Jaden Baugh, citing his balance, physicality, and versatility.

Odom said Ole Miss has prepared for Florida’s pass rush, which ranks among the nation’s most productive this season. He noted that the team has incorporated crowd noise into practices to simulate the environment in Gainesville. Odom credited coaches for helping the team move past the emotional high of the LSU game and stay focused on the next opponent.

Defensive back Sharif Denson, who played at Florida before transferring to Ole Miss, shared insights on what makes The Swamp a tough environment. Denson added that familiarity with Florida running back Baugh gives him an appreciation for his skills. He also said that having himself and Kite back on the field strengthens the secondary, especially in communication.

Purchase reflected on the LSU game as a memorable experience but stressed the importance of moving forward. He acknowledged the ongoing adjustment to Ole Miss’s defensive scheme and the need to continually improve. With the game at Florida approaching, the Rebels aim to carry momentum from their LSU victory into Gainesville.
