Lady Hornets apply pressure to run back-to-back state titles
New coach, no problem. The Lady Hornets were on a mission to run it back for a second state title in a row. They accomplished that mission with a 67-48 victory over Heidelberg.
Lake started out hot with two points from the perfect tip from Brooklyn Harris whom I call Block Party. Before ten seconds could run off the clock Lake already had scored. They were playing tough in your face defense soon as the game started. Taylor Clark put the finishing touches on the quarter with a buzzer beating three point shot. The Lake crowd went crazy. Lake was in the lead 13-4.
Lake started fast again in the second quarter. Number five was blazing down the court on offense and defense.
Things would get interesting with 4:21 seconds. After five missed shots in a row by Lake, Heidelberg would find their way to score four points in twenty seconds to be back within five after being down thirteen at championships.
“I told my girls to settle down,” said Coach Holly Moncrief. “We were in control and needed to stay in control. Just needed to do the little things we talk about in practice.”
Things were getting interesting, but Lake wasn’t done. Kaliauna Jones came off the bench with a quick seven points. A three-point shot and another three the traditional way. As the Lake crowd would say, the Lady Hornets were applying pressure.
Things would get interesting again when Annearrea Duckworth hit a nice jumper grok the top of the key to bring her team back within six. It would force Lake to call a timeout with 3:47 left in the third quarter. Lake was in the lead 33-27.
That didn’t last long at all. Lake was up 46-31 at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter Lake turnt it all the way up. They would close out the game in great fashion to be back-to-back champions. Laneisha Palm finished the game with 32 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Brooklyn Harris had 8 blks and 13 rebounds. Kelis Odom had 10 points and 4 rebounds from the bench.
“Brooklyn is our rim protector. She makes big stops when we need her to and scores points when we need her. And Laneisha, well she is one word, FAST!”
