Southwest Women’s Soccer hosted the No. 1 ranked Northwest Rangers on September 18 for their first home conference game of the season. The Lady Bears faced a challenging opponent but came out confident.
After starting goalkeeper Addison Champagne left the game in the 15th minute due to injury, the team turned to sophomore defender Adrien Collier. With no prior goalkeeping experience, Collier stepped into the net wearing a pink pinnie and small gloves.
Collier responded by making 10 saves against the top team in the country. Northwest took 14 shots on goal and earned 12 corners but scored only twice. It was an impressive feat for any emergency goalie, especially one with no experience.
The Lady Bears trailed 2-0 but scored a goal in the 70th minute when Nicole Galvan, Southwest’s leading scorer, converted a free kick. Galvan, who set the school’s all-time goals record earlier in the week, now has 21 career goals.
Despite their efforts, Southwest ultimately fell 2-1. The team, now 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in conference, will look to bounce back Tuesday on the road against Meridian.
