Northwest Mississippi football routs Mississippi Delta 42-0 after back-to-back losses

The No. 14 Northwest Mississippi Community College football team defeated Mississippi Delta 42-0 Thursday at Bobby Franklin Field, ending a two-game losing streak. The Rangers improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in division play. The Trojans fell to 1-3 and 0-1.

Northwest relied on a potent rushing attack, gaining 261 yards on the ground behind eight different ball carriers. All six of the Rangers’ touchdowns came from different players, highlighting their depth and team effort. Defensive Coordinator Paige Anders said the team is starting to come together as a unit.

The game was slow to start, with both teams punting twice in the first quarter and managing just one first down. The Rangers struck first on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Neko Fann to Zavion Carman after a punt return set up good field position. Mississippi Delta responded with a long drive but was halted by a sack and a fumble forced by Cameron Williams.

Northwest extended its lead with a 4-yard run from Macaleb Taylor and a quick 80-yard drive capped by a touchdown reception from Quincy Phillips Jr. The team led 14-0 at halftime. The second half saw the Rangers dominate, including a 70-yard, 16-play drive that resulted in Fann’s second rushing touchdown, pushing the lead to 28-0.

The defense contributed with six sacks and an additional TFL, stifling the Trojans’ offense. Backup quarterback Zach Benedict scored on a 7-yard run late in the game, making it 42-0 and triggering the running clock. Northwest outgained Mississippi Delta 407 to 140 and converted 60% of third downs.

Jeremiah Harkins led the rushing attack with six carries for 84 yards, followed by DJ Woods with 61 yards on eight carries. Receiving-wise, six players caught passes, with three scoring touchdowns. Fann and Gillon combined to throw for 146 yards and three scores, with Fann tossing two.
