Covenant Sweeps Belhaven in CCS Volleyball Opener
COVENANT, Ga. — Covenant opened its Collegiate Conference of the South volleyball season with a 3-0 victory over Belhaven on Friday night. The Scots won by scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-14.
Belhaven led 3-0 early in the first set before Covenant responded with five straight points. The set featured 10 ties and seven lead changes, with Belhaven holding a 23-19 lead late. Covenant then scored six consecutive points, including kills from Aubrianna Gerdes and Gabby Sumrall, to take the set 25-23.
The Scots carried momentum into the second set, opening with a 4-0 run. Despite efforts from Belhaven, which cut the deficit to 8-6 and 12-10, Covenant pulled away with a five-point run and a four-point stretch. The Scots hit .452 for the set and won 25-14.
Covenant started the third set with five straight points but Belhaven responded with four. Megan LaCour contributed two kills and a solo block as the Blazers narrowed the gap to 5-4. However, Covenant pulled ahead again, winning six of seven rallies to extend the lead to 17-10 and sealing the sweep with a 25-14 victory in the final set.
LaCour led Belhaven with nine kills and added seven digs and two blocks. Tarryn Woodall finished with seven kills and two blocks, while Goldie Lowe added five kills, an ace, and two blocks. Maggie Joy Tomlin posted a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs, along with two service aces. Kayla Robinson led all players with 25 digs, her third match with at least 20. Angel Edwards added eight digs off the bench.
The teams finished tied with five blocks each. Covenant recorded 46 kills with a .280 hitting percentage, while Belhaven had 27 kills and hit .054. Belhaven remains on the road Saturday against Oglethorpe, with a 1 p.m. start in Brookhaven, Georgia.
