Northwest Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 20 Copiah-Lincoln with Two First-Half Goals

Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s soccer team delivered a complete performance Tuesday night, defeating No. 20 Copiah-Lincoln 3-1 at home. The victory marks the Rangers’ first over a ranked opponent since at least 2020 and their first loss for the Wolves this season, dropping their record to 4-1-1.

Northwest struck early, with Jaylen Gray scoring in the 19th minute off a corner kick from Joseph Jackson. The freshman beat the Co-Lin goalkeeper to give the Rangers an early lead. Eight minutes later, Luke Lowrimore extended the lead with a goal from a throw-in, becoming the 10th Ranger to score this season. The offense has been balanced, with 14 different players contributing assists, according to head coach Windham Whatley.

In the second half, Northwest continued to push, with Jackson scoring his sixth goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Jairo Mendez set up the play, finding Jackson on the left side for a top-left corner finish. Despite a late penalty kick for Co-Lin in the 86th minute, which was converted, the Rangers maintained control. TJay Gibb, the goalkeeper, made several key saves, including a diving stop on the penalty attempt.

Whatley praised the team’s defensive effort and overall attitude.
