Meridian Community College (MCC) is both celebrating a legendary career and welcoming new leadership within its Men’s Basketball program. After an impactful tenure, Coach James Green will retire as head coach of the MCC Eagles men’s basketball team. Under Coach Green’s leadership since 2016, the program saw a remarkable resurgence, culminating in the team’s first Region 23 Championship and NJCAA National Tournament appearance since 1999. Coach Green also had back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in the program’s history and was both MACCC and NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year.
President Tom Huebner said of Green, “Coach James Green is a legend in the coaching profession, and I can’t say enough about what he’s done at Meridian Community College. He has, without a doubt, put MCC basketball back on the map. More importantly, though, he has invested himself in the lives of countless young men, and his pursuit of excellence has made a difference in ways that can’t be easily measured. We are thankful he chose to spend important years of his career in Meridian and wish him well as he retires.”
As we bid farewell to Coach Green, MCC is thrilled to announce the appointment of Clarence Weatherspoon as the new head coach. Bringing an impressive resume both as a player and coach, Weatherspoon’s experiences range from collegiate to the NBA—his dedication to basketball and his vision for MCC’s future promises exciting developments for the Eagles.
“If you know basketball, you know Clarence Weatherspoon,” said President Huebner. “He’s represented his home state at every level of his career and is the perfect fit to build on the foundations established by Coach Green.”
Weatherspoon’s coaching career includes serving as an assistant coach for the Jones College Bobcats for the past two years and as an assistant coach at Southern Miss from 2016 to 2022.
As a player, his accolades include being the only three-time Metro Conference Player of the Year and the all-time leading rebounder in conference history. As an amateur, Weatherspoon represented Team USA in the Goodwill Games, earning a silver medal, and the Pan American Games, securing a bronze.
Weatherspoon was selected ninth overall in the 1992 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Excited about his new role, Weatherspoon expressed his gratitude and readiness to contribute to MCC’s legacy, stating, “I’m thankful for this opportunity to lead and build on the success of MCC basketball. I look forward to bringing my experiences and passion to the program and the MCC family.”
With these changes, MCC looks forward to a new chapter in Eagles basketball, aiming to build on their recent success.
